Luis Suarez Biography

Extraordinary top forward Luis Suarez

Luis Suarez was born on January 24, 1987 in the city of Salto (Uruguay). Player height: 1.82 meters. Player weight: 81 kg. He is considered one of the world best forwards nowadays: he plays for Barcelona and the Uruguayan national team.

The first steps in football

The talented Luis Suarez distinguished himself very much on the football field comparing with his peers. The popular Uruguayan club Nacional scouts noticed him at one of the amateur football tournaments in 2003 and invited to their football academy.

Very young Suarez needed just two years to get into the first team! He showed himself incredibly for the first team in the first season: played in 29 matches and scored 12 goals. Luis won the Uruguayan Championship together with Nacional that year!

Luis Suarez transfer to Europe

He was invited to play in the Dutch championship after a successful season in Nacional. So the Dutch Groningen management paid for him €1 million in 2006. The adaptation process on the new continent was not difficult for him: he scored 10 goals in 29 matches.

Groningen received €7.5 million from Ajax for Luis Suarez in 2007! The contract with the Dutch Ajax was signed for 5 years.

Luis made his debut for the Uruguayan national team in a match against Colombia at the age of 20 in 2007. The game ended with a confident 3:1 victory of Uruguayans.

Suarez managed to consolidate his first team position for Ajax in the first season. He played in 33 games and scored 17 goals. The season was not so successful for the club itself, as the team took second place in the Dutch championship and did not beat Sparta in the Champions League qualification.

Luis Suarez played for Ajax from 2007 to 2011.

They didn’t win many trophies although the forward showed himself well in this club. He won the Dutch Cup only in 2009-2010 season, and the Dutch Championship in 2010-2011 season. He was awarded as the Dutch Championship best player in 2009-2010 season, with another award as the top scorer (35 goals scored).

The Uruguayan team moved on to the next round from the first group’s place at the World Championship in South Africa in 2010. They had draw with France, took a victory over South Africa 3-0 and over México 1-0. Suarez scored a goal in the game against México. Luis scored a double in the match against South Korea (2:1) in the 1/8 finals. Luis Suarez also became the match hero in the World Cup quarter-finals, though he drew a red card. So he saved his goal by playing with a hand in a match against Ghana in the added time. Then the Ghanians didn’t convert the penalty, and they finally lost in the penalty shoot-out (4:2). Uruguay lost matches to Holland 2: 3 in the semifinals, and to Germany 2: 3 in the match for third place without a disqualified Suarez.

Luis Suarez transfer to the Premier League

Luis moved to Liverpool for €26.5 million euros in the winter of 2011, where he managed to unlock his incredible skills even better.

Uruguay won the Copa America by defeating Paraguay in the final with score 3:0 in 2011. And Luis Suarez became the tournament best player, having scored 4 goals in 6 games.

Luis played for Liverpool from 2011 to 2014 (110 matches and 69 goals). He won the only trophy during that period, the Football League Cup (2011-2012). The Uruguayan forward spent his best season in 2013-2014 and became the Premier League and European championships best scorer (got a “golden boot”)!

Suarez can bite you from time to time

He bit PSV player Otman Bakkal for the first time in 2010. Then he was punished with 7 matches’ disqualification. It would seem a “single failure”, but it happened again in 2013: Suarez bit Branislav Ivanovic. He received 10 matches disqualification after that. Luis bit for the third time in 2014. Giorgio Chiellini was the “victim” this time. The player’s punishment for the systematic biting was much more serious then. FIFA forbade Suárez to play football for 4 months, as well as disqualified him for 9 matches for the Uruguayan national team. There was a fine also, a little less than a hundred thousand EURO.

These disqualifications did not allow him to finish the World Cup 2014, where he made every effort for the Uruguayan team to clear the group. In particular, he was remembered by two goals against England.

Should we expect some further bites? It is impossible to state for sure. His grandmother assumes he’s had a psychological trauma in connection with family problems and difficult childhood spent in the streets of Uruguay. It is worth noting that Luis issued an apology for his actions and promised to gain a control over himself in the future.

Golden Season 2014-2015

According to Suarez, his dream of living in Spain and playing for Barcelona came true in 2014. The Uruguayan forward cost a huge diamond for Barça – €81 million (a club’s transfer record). He got a jersey with a number 9.

Luis made his debut for Barcelona on August 18, 2014 in a friendly match against Lyon 6:0 (Joan Gamper ‘s Cup). He still could not play in official matches due to the disqualification from FIFA managers. So Luis trained on an individual schedule to maintain his physical shape. He played in friendly matches for Barca B several times.

Luis Suarez made his debut in the official match for Barcelona only on October 25, 2014. It was a game against Real Madrid in Liga BBVA. Then Barca lost 1:3.

Gradually, Suarez gained the optimal game form and won a first team place in Barcelona without problems. He began to play on his usual position as a classic striker at the front line. Messi began to play more deeply with Luis came to the team, giving more assists than before. They were called the attacking trio, together with Neymar and Messi, the best one in the world. So Messi and company scored in total 122 goals in 2014-2015 season!
