Gareth Bale: biography, career, personal life

Gareth Bale is a player of Real Madrid and the Wales national team. He plays at the rear forward position and distinguished by high speed and classy shot. The player started a football career at Southampton. He played at the left-defender position and was penalty kicks expert. Gareth began playing at more attacking positions after the transfer to Tottenham in summer 2007. The Bale’s transfer from London to Madrid costed €100 million for Real Madrid. By the way, it was a new transfer world record that time. He is the author of the first goal in the Wales’ national history in the European championship.

Biography and interests

Gareth Bale was born on July 16, 1989 in the capital of Wales, Cardiff. As a child, he decided for himself to become a professional football player. “I fell in love with football from the age of 3 and constantly asked my father to take me to the park to practice. I always had football in my life, and I think I was left-handed from the very first day,” he said. Gareth was an avid fan in his childhood. He watched all football matches and admired the world strongest football players. He constantly imagined himself on their place and dreamed of becoming a football star. Being a real football fan, Gareth actively hunted for the stars’ autographs and jerseys. For example, he has Alessandro Nesta, Ryan Giggs and Cristiano Ronaldo’s jerseys in his collection. Obviously, he could not imagine he would play in the same team with Ronaldo.

Start of career

“The first world championship I remember clearly was in France in 1998, when I was nine years old. I was delighted with the Brazilian game, they played so stylishly,” he shared his childhood impressions. Southampton agents caught sight of Bale at the age of nine. So he began training in one of the club’s affiliated academies then. Trainings brought only pleasure to the young Welshman. He tried to prove everyone and himself he could get great success in football. Bale played for the school 18-year-old team at the age of 16 and helped it to win the school Cardiff Cup. He has got the Wales Sport Department award the same year. The footballer came to Southampton at the end of the 2005/06 season. He played few games this football year. His first game for the Saints took place in a match against Millwall. They won with 2:0 score. Bale became the youngest player after Theo Walcott to play for Southampton in the official match.

Transfer to Tottenham

Bale started the next season in the first team. He played 38 matches and scored 5 goals in the end. Gareth transferred to the Spurs and became the first team player at once in 2007.The start of his career in London was successful: Bale scored 6 goals in his starting 4 matches (one of them in the English League Cup). But a knee injury prevented the footballer from having stronger positions in the first team. Thus, Bale was eliminated till the end of the season. Gradually recovering from injuries, he began to prove his right to play in the first team in the 2009/10 season.

Bale is back to the first team

Harry Redknapp noticed the young talent’s progress and gave him place in the first team. The player again played regularly in the Tottenham first team starting from January, 2010. Gareth Bale extended the contract with the team until 2014 on May 7, 2010. The Bale’s successful game helped the Spurs to occupy the 4th  place in the championship standings at the end of the season. It also allowed the team to qualify to the Champions’ League group stage for the first time in many years. Gareth scored his first double in the match against Stoke City in the England Championship on August 21, 2010. It brought his team a victory and allowed to rise in the standings. The Welshman scored his first goal to the Dutch FC Twente in the Champions League on September, 29 of the same year.

Great success and fight for the Bale’s transfer

Many European top clubs including Inter, Chelsea, Real Madrid and Milan were interested in him during the offseason. Meanwhile, Bale scored his first hat trick against Internazionale in the Champions League on October, 20. Unfortunately, it did not help the Londoners to avoid defeat (the match ended with 4:3 score in favor of the Italian team).

Player of the Year in 2011

Bale became the first Welshman to make a hat-trick in the Champions League. PFA recognized him as the Player of the Year in England in February, 2011. Gareth Bale changed his 3 number to 11 in 2012. He became a real Tottenham leader the next season. Bale won the PFA Player of the Year award for the second time in the 2012/2013 season. He also received the PFA Young Player of the Year award. The Welshman became only the third one to receive two awards at once. First was Andy Gray, the second – Cristiano Ronaldo, and they won both awards in 1977 and 2007-2008 respectively. Bale also won the best young player prize in Wales.

The most expensive transfer of Real Madrid

No wonder, Real Madrid wanted to see Gareth in their team after his successful season in Tottenham. Negotiations between the English and Spanish club were held the whole summer. And therefore the player was forced to miss all pre-season trainings, as well as the season’s start. Real officially confirmed the Bale’s transfer on September 1, 2013. Real paid €100 million for the Welshman transfer. It made Bale the most expensive player in the football’s history.

Amazing performance of the Welshman

Gareth scored a goal to Villarreal in the first match for the Whites. However, the midfielder suffered a minor injury shortly thereafter and it caused him to miss several matches. Nevertheless, Bale made a double on September 30, 2013, and also gave two assists in a match with Sevilla. He scored his first hat trick for Real Madrid to Valladolid on November, 30. Gareth scored the winning goal to Barcelona in the Spanish Cup final on April 16, 2014. And he scored the winning goal to Atlético in the Champions League final a month later, on May, 24. Bale began next season, as one of the Whites’ first-class leaders. Real won the UEFA Super Cup match against Sevilla on August 12, 2014. Bale played the entire match and gave two assists. Gareth scored one of the goals to San Lorenzo in the final on December 20, 2014. So Real won another trophy –  the Club World Cup.

Gareth Bale’s personal life


The football player is married. He met his wife as a teenager in Cardiff. Her name is Emma Rhys-Jones. They started dating, when they were still at school. Then they got married. Bale dedicates his goals to his wife. He patented the so-called “man-made heart” and demonstrates it every time he scores.
